The machine that changed the room

In 1985, a personal computer did not usually look like an Amiga.

For many people, a computer meant a keyboard, a monochrome or text-filled display, and a blinking cursor waiting for a command. Even graphical computers were generally expensive and specialized machines. The idea that a relatively affordable home computer could provide animation, stereo sound, a sophisticated color display and a graphical desktop was still unusual.

Then came the Amiga 1000.

When the machine was introduced in 1985, its operating environment was called Workbench. The name would become inseparable from the Amiga itself, surviving through successive generations of hardware and software for nearly two decades.

Workbench 1.0 was not merely a graphical file manager. It was the visible part of a much larger operating-system architecture that included the Exec multitasking kernel, AmigaDOS, Intuition, graphics.library and other system components. The official AmigaOS version history identifies this original operating-system generation as V30 / Kickstart 1.0.

For a modern user, the first Amiga boot procedure seems almost astonishingly elaborate.

There was no Kickstart ROM containing the complete operating system.

Instead, the owner started the Amiga 1000 with its small bootstrap ROM. The machine then asked for the Kickstart disk, from which approximately 256 KB of operating-system code was loaded into a special area of memory called Writable Control Store, or WCS. Once Kickstart was loaded, the computer requested the Workbench disk. Only then did the graphical desktop appear.

The Amiga’s entire personality was therefore spread across physical media.

The operating system was something you could hold.


Entering Workbench

Once the system finished booting, the user was presented with a blue desktop.

The screen contained icons representing disks and other objects. Windows could be opened, moved and resized with the mouse. Menus appeared when the appropriate mouse button was held down. Files and programs were represented by icons.

The terminology was deliberately different from the increasingly familiar language of DOS computers.

Directories became drawers.

Executable programs were tools.

The files they operated on were projects.

The desktop itself was the Workbench.

This wasn’t simply a collection of cute names. It expressed the philosophy behind the Amiga’s user interface: the computer should present its resources as objects that the user could manipulate rather than requiring the user to memorize commands.

The later AmigaOS documentation still describes this fundamental Workbench model in terms of screens, windows, menus, icons, gadgets and requesters.


Beneath the blue screen

The most important thing about Workbench 1.0 was actually something the user could not see.

The Amiga’s operating system had been designed around preemptive multitasking.

The Motorola 68000 processor was only one part of the story. Commodore’s custom chipset handled substantial portions of the machine’s graphics and multimedia workload, allowing the CPU and custom chips to cooperate in ways that were unusual for a personal computer of the period.

The original Amiga 1000 contained 256 KB of Chip RAM, expandable to 512 KB, with another 256 KB reserved for the Kickstart image in WCS. Its OCS chipset provided the graphics and audio capabilities that made the machine so distinctive.

The operating system itself was modular.

Among the important components were:

  • Exec — the multitasking executive/kernel
  • Intuition — the graphical user-interface system
  • graphics.library — graphics primitives and display operations
  • dos.library — filesystem and DOS functions
  • device drivers and other system libraries

The Amiga’s Kickstart environment contained many of these essential components, while Workbench supplied the graphical desktop and additional software loaded from disk.

This division is important when preserving the system today.

Calling Workbench “the Amiga operating system” is understandable, but technically incomplete.

Workbench was the desktop environment.

Kickstart was the collection of essential operating-system components normally resident in ROM on later machines—or loaded from disk on the original Amiga 1000.

Together, they formed the user’s Amiga operating environment.


A computer that still needed floppy disks

The original Workbench experience was very much a floppy-disk experience.

The Amiga 1000 shipped with a 3.5-inch floppy drive capable of storing approximately 880 KB in the standard double-density format. The original system was distributed across separate disks, with the Kickstart disk providing the initial operating-system image and the Workbench disk providing the desktop environment.

This created a curious ritual that modern Amiga enthusiasts immediately recognize:

Insert Kickstart.

Wait.

Insert Workbench.

Wait again.

Eventually, the blue Workbench desktop appeared.

It is easy to underestimate what this meant historically. The operating system was not an invisible layer permanently installed on the computer. The user interacted with it as a physical object.

A damaged disk could mean a damaged operating system.

A missing Kickstart disk could prevent the machine from booting at all.

For preservationists, that makes the original Workbench distribution especially significant.

The disks themselves are artifacts.

Their labels are artifacts.

Their packaging is an artifact.

Even the boot sequence is an artifact.


The first Amiga desktop

Workbench 1.0 established the visual vocabulary that would define the Amiga for years.

The familiar blue desktop provided a backdrop for icons representing devices and files. Windows had title bars, borders and gadgets. Menus could be pulled down from the top of the screen. The mouse provided direct manipulation of the environment.

The design was constrained by the hardware, but those limitations also helped define its character.

The Amiga 1000 could display multiple graphical resolutions and had a 12-bit color system capable of addressing 4,096 colors, although the number of simultaneously displayed colors depended on the particular display mode.

That combination of graphical flexibility and relatively inexpensive hardware was one of the Amiga’s defining characteristics.

Workbench didn’t look like a miniature version of a Unix workstation.

It didn’t look like DOS.

It had its own visual language.


What came in the box?

The original software environment extended beyond the Workbench disk itself.

The early Amiga software package included additional material such as ABasiC, a BASIC programming environment, and AmigaTutor, intended to help new users learn the computer.

This is historically revealing.

Commodore wasn’t expecting the Amiga to be used only as a consumer appliance. The software distribution introduced the owner to the machine as a platform that could be programmed, explored and customized.

The computer arrived with both a desktop and the means to begin understanding it.

That philosophy would remain important throughout the classic Amiga era.


A first-generation operating system

Workbench 1.0 was also remarkably immature.

This is important because historical preservation should not turn early software into mythology.

The first release was a starting point, not a finished endpoint.

The Amiga team was still refining fundamental elements of the operating system, and subsequent releases would arrive rapidly. Workbench 1.1 appeared later in 1985, followed by 1.2 in 1986 and 1.3 in 1988. The official version sequence identifies these as V30, V31/V32, V33 and V34 respectively.

The original release was also limited to the NTSC launch environment. PAL support arrived with the subsequent 1.1 generation.

In other words, Workbench 1.0 should be understood as the beginning of an evolutionary process, not as the definitive form of AmigaOS.


The significance of Workbench 1.0

Looking backward from modern computers, Workbench 1.0 can appear primitive.

Its icons were small.

Its memory was tiny.

Its storage was measured in hundreds of kilobytes.

Its operating system had to be loaded from floppy disks.

Yet those limitations make the achievement more remarkable.

Inside a computer with a 68000 processor and a few hundred kilobytes of memory was a preemptively multitasking operating system, a graphical user interface, a sophisticated graphics subsystem, four-channel digital audio and custom hardware capable of performing work that would otherwise have consumed much of the CPU.

The blue Workbench screen was therefore more than a desktop.

It was the public face of an entirely different approach to personal computing.

The subsequent history of AmigaOS—1.1, 1.2, 1.3, the dramatic Release 2 redesign, the AGA-era 3.x releases and eventually the post-Commodore AmigaOS generations—can all trace their ancestry back to this first public system.

Workbench 1.0 is where that story begins.
